Purple Heart medals at the IL State Treasurer's office

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – The tough part of Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs' job is tracking down the rightful owners of military Purple Heart medals.

His office has returned seven of those medals to veterans or their families. He is now launching Operation Purple Heart in an effort to return eleven more.

The military honors were submitted to the office of the State Treasurer as part of the Unclaimed Property program. Banks turning over the contents of safe deposit boxes after they have gone unclaimed over a period of several years.

“These medals personify honor, sacrifice, and duty,” Frerichs stated at the Illinois State Capitol on Tuesday. “They belong in the loving care of families rather than hidden inside our cold basement vault.”

One of the Purple Hearts came from a safe deposit box at a bank in Decatur. The last name of the recipient of the medal was Tuttle. Here is a full list of the eleven individuals or families being sought.

Last names and last known cities connected to the family that rented the safe deposit box containing the Purple Heart medal:

Cawthon, Received, Nov. 1, 1992, Portland, Oregon

Wilson, Received, Nov. 13, 1995, Chicago

Burns, Received, Nov. 5, 1997, Homewood

Moore, Received, Oct. 17, 2001, Peoria

Smith, Received, Nov. 18, 2002, Oak Park

Gorski, Received, Oct. 30, 2003, Darien

Tuttle, Received, Oct. 25, 2018, Decatur

Alexander, Received, Oct. 26, 2018, Channahon

Isbell or Shayer, Received, Oct. 31, 2018, Chicago

Steward or VanHasselaere, Received, Oct. 31, 2018, Round Lake

Wiest, Received, Oct. 23, 2019, O’Fallon

“Our ask is simple. If you recognize a name, and you know they lived in the city, then reach out to them because maybe we have their Purple Heart,” Frerichs said.

These honors were secured in a bank safe deposit box and untouched for several years before being submitted to the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. Also, given mergers and acquisitions, it is possible the name of the bank changed throughout the years.

David Grogan is  trying to get stories that haven't been told and unlike the ALPLM Oral History Project and the Secretary of State Veterans History Project, Dave Grogan is seeking to get veterans stories that haven't yet been told.  He's particularly interest in junior enlisted and junior officers.  The stories are not audio recorded but written in context of surrounding history so that the veteran's story is not just a list of dates and places.

Subject: Voices to Veterans Interview

American Legion Post 32,

I am a retired Navy captain and author living in Champaign, Illinois. I now interview veterans and write up their stories as a way of honoring their service and preserving their stories for their families and friends. There is no cost to anyone - I write the stories for free and they are publicly available on my website. My goal is to help the public understand what it means to serve in the military.

You can see the stories I've done so far at davidegrogan.com/voices-to-veterans/. As you can see from the forty-plus stories I’ve written, the veterans need not be combat veterans. Every veteran’s service is valuable and every veteran has a story worth telling. I am particularly interested in the stories of junior enlisted and junior officers, as their stories are the ones least likely to be told. Also, I have yet to interview a veteran who served in Afghanistan and would really like to make sure Afghanistan is covered. To be eligible for consideration, a veteran must have received an honorable discharge.

If you have any veterans that might be interested in working with me to help tell their stories, please email me at VoicesToVeterans@gmail.com or call me at 757-635-9082. It takes about 1.0 to 1.5 hours for me to interview them by telephone and they get to approve/make changes to the article before it's posted.

Please don’t hesitate to call me anytime at 757-635-9082 with any questions.

Thanks!

Dave Grogan

Hello.  My name is Don Smith.  I'm reaching out to American Legion posts to spread the word about a book I've written, about an American success story in the Cold War.  It's an episode in our history that American veterans should be proud of.  For that reason, I thought that American Legion members would be interested in it.

I've enclosed information about the book.  We're taking preorders now; we also have a GoFundMe campaign, to raise money to buy copies of the book and send them to libraries in the U.S.

I am available to do ZOOM presentations on the book and the stories in it.  I'm also available to do interviews on local radio. If you have any suggestions on groups or organizations that might be interested in this book, I'd be grateful if you e-mailed me their points-of-contact.

Please feel free to forward this e-mail, and/or any of the attachments, to anyone that might be interested.

Thank you for considering my request.

Warmest regards,

Donald Smith
