Just a reminder about floral regulations at national cemeteries.

Cemetery policies are conspicuously posted and readily visible to the public.

Floral arrangements accompanying the casket or urn at the time of burial will be placed on the completed grave. Natural cut flowers may be placed on graves at any time of the year. They will be removed when they become unsightly or when it becomes necessary to facilitate cemetery operations such as mowing.

Artificial flowers will be permitted on graves during periods when their presence will not interfere with grounds maintenance. As a general rule, artificial flowers are permitted on graves during the period of October 10 through April 15. Potted plants will be allowed on graves 10 days prior to Easter only. These plants must be removed 10 days after Easter. Potted plants will not be allowed at any other time.

Christmas wreaths, grave pillows and other seasonal adornments may be placed on graves from Dec. 1 through Jan. 20. They may not be secured to headstones or markers.

Permanent plantings, statues, vigil lights, breakable objects and similar items are not permitted on the graves. The Department of Veterans Affairs does not permit adornments that are considered offensive, inconsistent with the dignity of the cemetery or considered hazardous to cemetery personnel. For example, items incorporating beads or wires may become entangled in mowers or other equipment and cause injury.

Decorative items removed from graves remain the property of the donor but are under the custodianship of the cemetery. If not retrieved by the donor, they are then governed by the rules for disposal of federal property.

We are cleared for take-off! After being grounded for over two years due to COVID restrictions and related health concerns, Land of Lincoln Honor Flight is pleased to announce that current conditions allow us to resume flights to honor our veterans! We have planned five (5) flights for 2022: June 14, July 19, August 30, September 27 and November 1.

We plan to start contacting and booking all WWII and Korean Era veterans on our wait list as well as the Vietnam Era veterans who were originally scheduled on the canceled April 2020 flight. In keeping with our policy, the remaining Vietnam veterans on our wait list will be contacted for their flight in order of their date of application.

Join the Illinois State Military Museum Saturday, February 19th at 6:00pm to learn about the history of the Illinois National Guard in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War. Guest speaker Jim Opolony will talk about the experiences of the men of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion from Maywood, Illinois. This is a free event. Mr. Opolony is a retired teacher from Proviso East High School. He helmed the Bataan Commemorative Research Project, an oral history project conducted by Proviso East High School students with veterans of the 192nd Tank Battalion.

3 FEBRUARY 1943 - FOUR CHAPLAINS DAY #WWII
On February 3rd, 1943 the troop transport ship USAT Dorchester was sailing across the Atlantic from Newfoundland to an American base in Greenland. A converted luxury liner, the Dorchester was crowded to capacity, carrying 902 servicemen, merchant seamen and civilian workers. It was only 150 miles from its destination when shortly after midnight it was hit by a torpedo from U-223, striking the ship far below the water line.
The initial hit killed scores of men and seriously injured many others. Through the pandemonium, four men spread out among the Soldiers, calming the frightened, tending the wounded and guiding the disoriented toward safety. They were four Army Chaplains; Lt. George Fox, a Methodist; Lt. Alexander Goode, a Rabbi; Lt. John Washington, a Roman Catholic Priest; and Lt. Clark Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister.
The chaplains helped hand out life jackets from storage lockers and when they were all gone the four chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young men. One survivor would later recall, "It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven."
As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains, arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers and singing hymns. Of the 902 men aboard the Dorchester, only 230 survived.
Although the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart were later awarded posthumously Congress wished to award the Medal of Honor but was blocked by the stringent requirements which required heroism performed under fire. So, a posthumous Special Medal for Heroism, The Four Chaplains Medal, was authorized by Congress and awarded by the President on January 18th, 1961. It was never given before and will never be given again.

Beer Sales at the state fair are opening up

 

 Quincy Veterans Home Fundraiser for a custom UTV. Three Veteran organizations contribute towards the project totaling $2,800 dollars. I want to send a thank you out to Northenders V.F.W. Post 10302, IL VFW District 10, and AMVETS Post 94. The new total funds raised to date is 14,800 out of 24,000. Thank you for your support.
