National cemeteries plan brief, private ceremonies for Memorial Day
MEMORIAL DAY: The big flags on the main road will be up. Flags will not
be placed on graves unless you provide your own. Gates are open for
spaced out groups of no more than 10 to decorate graves with no
coordinated time. There is NO JOINING groups when placing flags. THERE
IS NO SCHEDULED time. Just do it. Scouts did not plant flags on Memorial
Day itself. Understand that this is an unofficial support page when it
pertains to specific questions. Please read the official notice about

Received a call from Sangamon County
9-1-1 Communications Operator Ms. Jennifer Stone (Daughter of Retired
SCSO Lt. Gary Stone) and she is going to place American Flags on the
graves at Camp Butler.
She is looking for people to assist and may also be looking for flags.

There are a lot of articles
that have a subject that the scouts are BANNED which is misleading.
Truth is that there are no public ceremonies.
Scouting is being done online
for the time being. It is not disbanded or barred from anything. We are
just not allowed to have group gatherings at this time. We can as a
family go out as we have for many years. We just cannot gather as a
group.

As mentioned during the Quincy advisory council meeting on May 16 in which the director of IL Veterans Affairs attended, volunteers will be placing flags in lieu of scouts and the request was placed in the newspaper as follows:

QUINCY -- Volunteers are
sought to help place and remove American flags by each headstone at
Sunset Cemetery on the grounds of the Illinois Veterans Home for the
Memorial Day weekend.
American Legion
Post 37 of Quincy, with assistance from Quincy Scouts BSA, will be
placing flags starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22. Removal will
begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.
In case of rain, the work will be postponed by one day.
Sunset Cemetery's main entrance is on U.S. 24, just east of the
Knapheide Co. property on North Fifth. Upon arrival, volunteers will
receive an instruction sheet for proper placement of flags. No previous
notice is required.

Chatham Memorial Day Services Announced
Chatham Memorial services will take on a new look this year. We will not be having our Traditional Services this year. We’ll have several things going on.
The Chatham VFW will be hosting a “Poppy Art” Display around the Veterans Memorial Park. Displays will start at Chestnut and Market Streets and head North to Mulberry Street. Each parking space will be the booth. For more information check the Chatham VFW website, Facebook Chatham

The Chatham Jaycee’s will be hosting a drive by parade. Please decorate with Red, White and Blue or anything Patriotic. Parade will start at Chatham Elementary School on South College Street in Chatham at 10am. More information can be found on the Chatham Jaycees Parade Facebook page.
The Chatham American Legion and Chatham VFW will have a Joint Color Guard posted around The Veterans Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park ‘On the Square’ from 10am to 10:30am. There will be no speeches or crowds in keeping with the Distancing regulations. If you want to drive around the
Square and honk your horn in support of our Veterans, that would be appreciated.
We hope to have the Chatham Fire Department display their Big Flag on Market Street 10-10:30am.
On Saturday morning members of the Chatham American Legion and Chatham VFW will be placing Flags on all of the graves at the Chatham Cemeteries.

Honor Flight scheduled for April, May, and June are canceled due to COVID-19
Please be informed that the 32nd Illinois Vietnam Veteran 24-hour
Vigil schedule for June 5, 6, & 7 must be cancelled based on the
information received from the State of Illinois. It will not be
rescheduled this year.
However, we did perform the 24-hour Vigil
on the regular scheduled May date without public participation and
normal ceremonial activity in order to meet all of the State’s mandates.
Our Black Tiger Honor Guard, Band of Brothers and the Freedom Riders
manned the
24-hour Vigil. Members of
the Vietnam Vets Legacy Vets MC were there also standing watch &
brothers from the Outlaws and Black Pistons were there as well.
We thank them for their assistance during these difficult times.

Received an
anonymous call a few minutes ago from a lady who advised that she has
reported this to the Springfield PD. Apparently someone is calling
people and saying they are from The American Legion
and advising the people that they have won a trip because of their
American Legion membership. They mention several American Legion Post
Numbers, including ours here in Springfield, #32 and then they start
asking a lot of questions apparently attempting to
get information on the people by advising about this Free Trip. Please
pass the word that Springfield Post #32, The American Legion is not
doing this and if someone gets a call please report to your local police
agency.

American Legion Post 759 is announcing that the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Chatham Veterans Memorial Square has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The May 25 event will not happen for the safety of the community. Because social distancing requirements at this time, we have decided not to have our yearly Memorial Day Ceremony on the Square. We do not want to put anyone at risk – including those who participate in making this a wonderful event – and those who attend the ceremony.
Instead of the normal service, we will put flags on the graves of the veterans buried at Chatham Community Cemetery and asks residents to safely pay their respects to all the veterans buried there from May 23-25
VFW 4763 will be hosting a display of Poppy Themed Artwork around the at Chatham Veterans Memorial Square. The community is asked to participate. More information at https://www.facebook.com/VFWPost4763/
VFW 4763 Post will be having an Veterans day service on Nov. 7 and at that time, we will combine it with what we would have done on Memorial Day, We don’t want to forget all of the veterans who gave their lives for our country, but we don’t think it is safe at this time to gather in a group to honor these brave Americans.
